I admit it, I am a Harry Potter fan. I attend meetings, but everytime a book comes out, or the next movie gets talked about I fall off the wagon. I am hopeless. If you are not a fan, you wont care about this post.
So imagine my distress when I read this news at SlashFilm:
The actress who plays Hermione Granger in the series thus far has yet to sign the contract for the last two installments. The worst part is, she doesn’t seem eager to do so.
“I don’t know yet,” Watson told Newsweek. “Every film is such a huge production, and it’s a long time.”
The 16-year-old actress says she isn’t even sure she wants to keep acting.
This is troubling news for Potter fans indeed. Like them or hate them, the Potter movies have at least had some consistency and magic because of its actors. (yes I know there were 2 Dumbledores already) People didnt just fall in love with the characters and personalities of the Harry Potter movies, they were consumed by the actors that portrayed them. If Emma Watson was to leave the movie series before it was completed its run, this could really change the feel of the characters.
I am not saying Watson is a fine actress or attempting to say she does this so well that no one could play the part. Quite the opposite. I think Watson would have a hard time moving on to something different (and I think they will all have a difficult time outliving these roles) so for her to consider quitting acting altogether wouldnt be the end of the world for Watson. She is young, and now has a heaping pile of money and a taste for Mexican beer. Im sure she will do fine.
My concern is consistency. It worked for James Bond or Batman because the CHARACTER of Batman or Bond was far bigger than the actor anyways. The actor aspired to embody that persona. In this situation, the Harry Potter fans have grown to love the character of Hermoine BECAUSE of Watson. Imagine if they replaced Harrison Ford as Indiana in the second movie, or as Han Solo. Could you even imagine someone else playing his part? (Im not comparing the acting ability of Harrison Ford to Emma – relax) This is another example of how the character is defined by its actor.
It would be weird to see someone else playing Hermoine in the movies. I dont know how well that would work. Maybe JK Rowling will write it into the next book that Hermoine dies so they just dont have to cast her for book 7.
As the SlashFilm poster says, this could also be a ploy to get more cash for her role, so who knows. Also note that IMDB has her listed as “attached” for the sixth film and that Rupert Gint (Ron Weasley) has yet to be reported as signed.
hey! You know what? harry potter movie will not be the same if it won’t be played by the same actresses or actors. Especially Haryy, Ron, and hermione because they are the most important character here. I would really find it weird if anyone beside Emma will play her role. It just doesn’t seem right.

It was already confirmed though by Warner Bros that she has signed the contract in late March 2007!!!
I’m pleased to announce that she will be returning in the last 2 installments of the Harry Potter films
The 6th film is to be realeased on November 21,2008 and they will begin filming at the end of this year.
The 7th film will be released sometime in 2009,but there is no exact release date.
Just though you all might like to know this.

If someone else got her part, everyone in America and all the other countries in the world would hate that person. Emma Watson or Hermione Granger, her fans have fallen in love with her. Think of what she has done, how important she is in Hogwarts, the troll, the chamber, Azkaban, goblet, and the order. She is much too important to let her go. She cant just quit and walk off screen. She would be letting us down. I am a crazed Harry Potter fan and i belive she can do it. She has got to. Who else can replace her? She cant just die off screen or randomly. right? And I think everyone would agree if i said we would be crushed if she left. I think that Emma Watson Should not quit. Think about it she has been through much to much with Harry and Ron. Think about Ron, she is too big of a character to have die off screen.if she will quit she can at least die for us to see. No one and I mean No one can replace the one and only Hermione Granger. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!! When they interviewed Emma, she never said those words! They twisted her words around. I was there when she was talking to the reporter. She said that the movies are a lot of hard work and that they do take a while to make, but that she loves to go on set and see everybody again. She also said that she had signed her contract a month earlier then usual. She couldn’t wait to do the movies with Daniel Radclife(Harry Potter, Tom Felton(Draco Malfoy), Rupert Grint(Ron Weasley), And Bonnie Wright(Ginny Weasley). SQUASH THE RUMORS NOW!!!!!

My honest opinion: She won’t quit.
Being the same age as Emma, I understand she may be at a Crossroads in her life. Though this may be, I think she just wishes for a normal teenage life. If you remember Rupert is two years older and Daniel is a year older so they are already 18 and 19…So, they’re teenage years have nearly past them. Not to say that at 16 nearly 17 Emma does not have a short amount of teenage years left..but, now I am babbling. The fact of the matter is she won’t quit. These movies have molded her life thus far. She will finish it out..
Emma please don’t leave you are my favorite actress and I look up to you. If you leave I will be really sad. Please don’t make me cry. I’m your bigest fan, and if I had one wish,it would be that you to act in the last two Harry Potter movies. Please, please, please, please, please, I’m begging you please act in the last two Harry Potter movies.

To be honest, I think MOST people would consider it a real blow if Emma left, she fits AND plays the part of hermione really well, and I think also that most people would find it hard to familiarise themselves with a different actor. It would be a bit like someone else playing Jack Sparrow, imagine if someone else like… Sean Bean played Jack Sparrow, how sucky would that be?(not saying sean bean is crap, just saying Johnny Depp much better at playing Jack.) And to all those people who say she was better in the first 2 films, the only reason for that is because of her age, seeing as they have left about 2 and a half years between the 4th and 5th film, it’ll be strange (if she stays on) to see probably a 20 year old playing a 16 year old, (if they leave 2 and a half years between each film that is)
Also, if Emma left, I don’t think the acting would be as good seeing as Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint And Emma Watson have been acting together for…. 4-5 years? To me, Emma will always be Hermione, because I read the books after I watched the first film, and I couldn’t imagine anyone else face whilst I read the books, as read them every so often.

Personally, I do not think Emma portrays Hermione as well as she did in th first two movies. Hermione was never portrayed as a pretty girl. She’s suppose to be plain, not ugly – but nothing spectactular. I think that the producers have made a mitake by concentrating on Emma’s good attributes – nonetheless, I don’t think the movie would be quite right without Emma portraying Hermione in the final two. It was very unfortunate that Richard Harris passed away. With the exception of Alan Rickman, I don’t think any actor has come as close to perfect character portrayal.
I don’t think Emma is holding out for more money. She was 10 when she did her first, and was in no way mentally prepared to face the fact that the next decade of her life would be 100% committed to portraying a fictional character in a cult phenomenon. I truly feel she’s being honest, and would really like to take her life in a different direction. If she wanted more money, I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t need to put on an act to get it. She’s approaching the age, where in order to continue acting she would need to find a way to bust out of her child actor shell. If I’m not mistaken, she is 17 now, and by the time the whole HP thing is said and done, probably 19. Nine years of portraying a 1 role as a Child will require something dramatic to force the public to see you as anything else, and to be cast into something more Adult.
After seeing Radcliff take to the stage nude in order to break out of his role, Emma may not be interested enough in acting to force herself into a position she’s not comfortable in. Hell, she’s already brought in enough money to support herself for a very long time. More popular child actors have lost that money following their roles trying to live a life playing roles that they could not handle – She may just be ready to invest her earnings towards something she is more interested in persuing.

While I would hate to see her go, I could truly respect such a mature decision at her age.
I Agree with chrustuna about richard ferris…but dont this is all probably crap she most likely wont leave…do you honsolty think that they didn’t make her sign a contract when she first started…she may not have signed it as she was only 12 but her parents might of and waited untill movie 3 or something but i am planning to be a movie producer i no about contracts and stuff but im already tired of the girl who plays luna and iv only heard her voice once…and i hate her playing luna…shes so un lunaish

Anyway, i remember a post here last year around the time goblet of fire came out, and it said pretty much the exact same thing. She either wants a really big paycheck, or is actually telling the truth(which I doubt).
She won’t quit acting.
Think about it.
Fair play the girls been working bastard hard for years and years, she needs a break if you ask me. What I’m thinking she’s doing is quitting now with plenty of cash in the bank, in case she can’t get back in.
THEN. Let some other Hermione show up so that people recognise Hermione with this new person, so she can sneak into proper acting, instead of franchise acting. While everyone else is trying to get rid of the Harry Potter stigma she’ll be getting decent roles because people will have stopped associating her with that one character.
There’s three movies to go remember, plenty of time to forget about Emma Watson.

I gotta agree with Louis. I don’t think it’d be that difficult to find someone else to play Hermoini. Reasoning is simple: the characters are growing up and in their pubescant stages, so finding someone a little older but similar would work. I didn’t think EW did that great a job in the last flick, although she is a real cutie. That’s all she really has going for her right now.
It’s doubtful she wants to quit the biz, and if she doesn’t, I don’t think it’d be hard finding other roles. I do think, though, that her “stereotype” will be what everyone expects and she’ll be cast that way.

It’s smart for her though, to play it non-chalant like this. I’d do the same thing if I was in her shoes. It just guarantees that she’ll get what she asks for in her contract renewal. Unless she’s demanding something completely ridiculous (like $100 million dollars), or the producers are trying to fuck her over by not giving her a decent paycheck (producers have been known to be penny pinchers… no really it’s true…) , well….like I said at the beginning, there’s no reason to worry.
I wouldn’t be surprised if her manager put her up to it.

And even if they kill her off in book seven, she’s too important a character for the death to happen offscreen, so that’s not a solution.
She might be hustling for a fatter paycheck. Gary Oldman did the same thing before Goblet of Fire before he returned as Sirius, remember? I hope she comes back, too. I haven’t read page 1 of ANY of the books, but I love the movies, so she’s Hermione to me.
I am sad to hear that Emma Watson is quitting Harry Potter. She is a great actress and I think she is making a terrible mistake, she should do the other two movies. It should not matter what people think or say they are just jealous that she is in the spot light and they are not.
