Ian McKellen hints at X-Men 4

It seems like the one comment made by a Studio Exec (about this being the end for the X-Men franchise) is being pretty much universally rejected by everyone who has worked on the film. A little while ago we had a story about Patrick Stewart gawfing at the idea that there would be no more X-Men films, and now it looks like he’s being joined by Sir Ian McKellen.
The good folks at Superhero Hype give us this:
Sir Ian McKellen was on the Jonathan Ross show here in the UK earlier. Ross had seen X3 but Sir Ian hadn’t yet so Sir Ian asked Ross “was Magneto playing chess at the end of the film?”. Ross said yes and deduced that Sir Ian was checking whether or not the film would be left open for further sequels. Sir Ian was pleased to learn that that the chess scene was in the final cut, suggesting that the film IS being left open for further sequels and that he would be very happy to return as Magneto!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… the ONLY factor that will mean anything in the debate to make a 4th X-Men film anytime soon will be X-Men 3. How well the film turns out and how well it is received by the public is all that matters at this point. We’ll have to wait and see. Just two more weeks folks! (Thank to Pineapplehead for the heads up)

Well, the ending *is* left open, but ridicullously so. And I’m guessing it will be even more ridiculous if the try and make a sequel connection out of it, especially since there’ve been some major shifts in the players anyway. I mean, after all the WTF moments of the film, they should really try and find a very different approach to the possible sequel this time.
This movie’s gonna make a boatload of money whether it’s any good or not. If someone’ll make a sequel to Catwoman then you can bet your ass there’ll be another X-Men movie. After the Wolverine spin-off, obviously.
For me, as long as we’ve got McKellen, Stewart, Jackman and Janssen, I’ll be a happy camper (oh yeah and Joss Whedon directing would be a great addition).
I don’t think you *need* any of the people themarina mentions. X-Men is one of those comic books where there are so many characters, you can just start a new sequel like a new issue: some of the heros are away and some are home to answer the call. Personally, I think too much emphasis has been given to Wolverine aready in these movies. Why not have a sequel without Jackman? It would be a perfect time to introduce Gambit. Their universe is so rich, there’s plenty of opportunity for a studio to continue even if they can’t retain all their established players.
That said, Stewart and McKellen are so perfect that it would be a shame to not have them.
I figure he was hinting at the Magneto spin off movie rather than X-Men 4. I understand there are plans for a Wolverine movie as well.
I do think there will be an X4,there has been many hints, and as i have said before, I would be very happy for there to be an X4 only if the director is Bryan Singer again or Tim Burton! I think the spinn off films are gonna be made first though which could be good. and as i have said before also bring back Nightcrawler, there could be a Nightcrawler prequel or spinn off made too
The first two movies were so Wolverine-centric that a Wolverine spin-off seems utterly pointless.
Where the hell has Gambit been? And the fire and ice men are boring. O by the way, Rogue is in love with Gambit not Ice Boy. Who was that actress that could move like the Flash? That was the worst acting I’ve seen since the movie The Interpreter. Hugh Jackman, Sir Ian, and Jean Luke Picard have carried this entire trilogy. Aslo on bad acting (Halle Berry) and for the writers they have done a good job of keeping Rebecca (whatever her last name is now)’s dialogue to a minimum except for this movie. I would prefer it if she didnt say anything. On a positive the Beast was perfectly portrayed and I liked the Juggernaught o yeah the Phoenix was awesome too. It would have been awesome to have her soul burst into flames in the shape of a Phoenix at the end. But I am looking forward to the X men battling Sentinels in a nuclear aftermath or something like that in the next movie. I don’t know, the writers have deviated to much from the original story line for me. I would like to see Cable and some others. But overall a b+.
This whole movie was a WTF. I mean, did they honestly have to kill everyone that mattered? I am not Cyclops fan, but still, he had five mins. And who decided they should kill Prof. X? Prof X is the xmen. The whole problem was the fact that Bryan Singer didn’t direct this one. Brett Ratner ought to be shot for this disgrace. Oh yea, did I mention that killing Jean Grey was a shitty idea? Gimme a break. I was glad to see the movie, but I think my disapointment is much higher then my happiness.
Yea… I loved all the graphics and the nice little side story of the angel guy. I wish they used the angel guy more… Anyways im really upset that Jean died and when Cyclops died know one apparently really cared they were just like “Jean you killed Cyclops didnt you” and then the others were like “No way!” and thats all that happened there. I thought those tatooed girls/boys not sure wut they were, were really funny I liked the drag queen. I hope in X-4 that they make Dr. X come back like Jean did or sumthing like his “mental force” is still with the X-team. I’m the most upset though about how Mystique went down. She was definately the coolest character in there and when she lost her powers for Magneto he totally screwed her over… that didn’t really make any sense to me because he was practically in love with her and obsessed over her. She was like his daughter. I hope that it ends up being that the cure isn’t permanent and actually only works for a year or months or sumthing.
There will imo be a sequel with Xavier and the cure isn’t permanent, what other meaning could the 2 spin off’s before and after the credits have?
I loved it. I was a little disappointed in the middle but when it was over i really liked the whole movie.
missed gambit too
ok, well in so far as the movie goes, and aslong as the story line of the x-men goes, the whole thing goes along the line of x-men. The story lines they are taking, matches what has taken place in the Marvel Univers.(remember they are trying to shove 30+years of Comic books into 3 2 hour movies!) There are certain liberties though that are taken into consideration. if you match the story lines with the comic, a lot of the story lines coencide with the Earlier x-men comics. At least within term of Main and Most popular Charter development. (99-200)There are a lot more Charters in the main Comic line that never appear in the movie.(and don’t need to considering the events that take place, and the popularty of the extra stories.) Some of the more Popular Charters from the current comic never exsited in the earler days, (Gambit is a Main example) and thats not the priortiy in terms of the story. In so far as who dies and who dosen’t, well remember the phonix is one POWERFULL MF! and in the Marvel univers, was one of the top end most powerfull Creatures in exsistance in her day,(the phonix was never really a Muntant if you read about the early series not Jean Grey) now with the way the comics can change i could be wrong, But with her in exsistance (dead or alive) anything is possible. So Scott Summers aka Cyclops dead? i will belive it when i see his cold dead body. The phonix could have riped Wolverine from head to toe no problem, but she diden’t. remember she loved scott, and like nearly every other female in the Marvel univers had animal attraction to wolerine. so why would the phonix, a carbon copy of Jean, kill Scott summers? people think cyclops and Jean Gery are dead and gone? wait till x4 and beyond before making that decision.
I don’t like the fact that everyone in the movie is a Mutant. The marvel univers has Charters in it that are much more divers then what are in the movie. A primary example is the Jugernaught. (no he is not a superstrong smashem up dude because of a direct mutant ability although his abilities are atributed indrectly to a mutation.) The Graphical Repersentations displayed on this film are astounding. Especailly the big fights with the Telekenitics.
i watched xmen 3 after the credits to see charles xaiver be reencarnated into the soul-less man he was debating in ethics class.
this leaves the possiblity for the age of apocoplyse for the real final chapter. as the cure story line was close to the AOA where alot of mutants die and form a alliance to fight.
however its still to early to tell the facts are known that hugh jackman has already shot 3 drafts into the wolverine movie slated for 2007.
a real question is with the deaths of jean grey, and cyclops will there be enough background to support a fourth movie. anyhow i understand wolverine is a prequel which will hold no close storyline to the xmen series (but hints there might be a few camos) lets hope for a 4th installment and hope they make it great. as a true comic book fan i really do not understand why they killed of cyclops and jean. beause in the book of the movie she states looking into the future with wolverine and they having a kid ” marvel girl ” but we all know jean grey and scott summers have a son called nathan summers aka Cable. this is a wonder we all will sit and wait and hope the film industry sees the $ the series made and continue making them. as i seen typed here before i agree movies should not end in 3′s such as xmen where the story will take multiple sequels to fully tell the tale.
i suggest to thsse wishing gambit was in the third movie to read the book based on the movie after the last chapter they have a few extra pages where wolverine is training the new students in the danger room, he noticed one of them and asked his name which was remy aka gambit. hes in the end of the book but not in the movie.
the book tells a little more and has a different ending without xavier being reencarnated. and the irish women gives magneto a card saying she can help. he asks ” why do i need your help and the book states he moves a chess piece barelly noticing things that differ from book to movie will help distinct what coul hold to another movie if made
well, do you know, in the comic book, when the Pheonix killed Professor Xavior, she actually sent him to another planet, even thought i looked like she killed him the director was probably making us think all that, but there really might be a important factor in this. Plus you guys are right there are still a lot of x-men to be introduced too.
well i didnt get to ready anybody comments below me but i do have some opinions i would like to say about X3. X3 was a great movie but the only think that dissapointed me about the movie was that it ended like that. I mean it was a good ending is just that i wanted to see more. I heard some rumors about there was a scene at the end of the credit where it hints the viewers to an X4. I dont know if its true but i have to go back and check it out myself. If they do decide to come out with an X4 which i hope they do, how are they gonna continue the story without Charles Xavier, Scott Summers, and Jean Grey? I mean c’mon without them we’ll be short characters. I didnt wanna spill my idea about how they can continue X3 with all the characters cuz i dont want any of the producers to steal my idea if they havent came out with it yet. But the most logical and possible way that i can think of them continuing X3 is that in X4, the cure killed a lot of mutants and cost some sorta disease. Like they could start the story off in a distance future where everyone is dying from the cure and the only way to stop it is to go back into the future. This is where Cable comes in. The time travler. He can go back to where the pheonix was born and stop everything from happening and at the same time. I think it is more than possible to have an X4 if they do it right. I mean in the cartoons, wasnt Storm and Wolverine married in the distance future? Well all i can say is for now is i wouldnt doubt that they would come out with X4
the third x men movie was great even it did hv not a lot but a few flaws like not hvin nightcrawler but i forgot to stay and see the scene at the end of the credits could u tell me wat it was?
the only thing i did not like in the movie because it is kid geared/family movie type was the unnecessary cussing by the jugernaught and kitty (the girl who walked through the walls). I really wanted to see jean burst into a pheonix like she did in the cartoon version. But I think it will happen in the next sequel because if I remember correctly from the cartoon that either scott or wolverine find jean in a hospital that is surronded by water where she is getting treatment to help control the pheonix. And isn’t Xavier with her there?
