  1. Are the comments working again? If so, I’d just like to say that I’ve never heard a “movie” podcast that contained so much information about coffee and beards. I’ve actually been looking for a good podcast that combines coffee-info with opinions about facial hair, and I think I may have found it!

Now I’ve got to get back to Starbucks and pensively stroke my beard while I flare my nostrils at pretty girls.

Terry Gilliam did direct 12 monkeys and have no doubt of his whimsical and dark directing.
See Time Bandits,The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Brazil A.S.A.P.Not to mention being a member of Monty Python.

This is a fantasic choice and Terry Gilliam was considered for the first and second movies but being a darker progression in the novels Terry Gilliam may produce the most engaging and magical HP movie yet.

Rick Moranis is a country singer

    DC Talk blows!

    Keep up the great podcasts!

  3. Drew says:

Terry Gilliam is not British; he was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was the only member of Monty Python that was American. Sorry I am a Python nut so I had to correct you guys.

Because I’m generally away from my computer when I listen to the audio edition, I rarely get a chance to comment, and instead have to console myself to screaming obscenities at people in the subway. Thankfully, today I decided to listen to this one online, and can now vent directly to you people.

I’ve paused the podcast just after you talked about Terry Gilliam directing the next Harry Potter in order to immeditly put in my two cents about this (I may be back to scream some more as I resume the podcast)

Initially, Terry Gilliam directing Harry Potter seems like a perfect match. One thing I sorely missed in the first several movies was the sense of wonderment and confusion Harry had over the crazy parallel world of wizardry that he was suddenly exposed to. The story of a kid being raised in a practical, down to earth British home thust into a world where all the rules he’s known are turned on their head would be perfect for Gilliam’s visual style which quite lends itself to those wonderful, “What the fuck!?” momments. Proper direction would allow us to experience the confusion that Harry would have felt when confronted with some of the stuff he witnesses. Instead, we were given, “hey kid, run at that wall as fast as you can.” “Sounds reasonable to me! Okay!”

However, there are two major issues that make this very argument work against this decision.

First: 5 movies in to the franchise is no time to introduce that sense of wonderment and confusion that should have been there in the first movie. By book 5 or 6 Harry has finally started to figure out the way this new world works, suddenly turning the world “weird” at this point would do more than break continuity, it would thrust Harry back several steps in his development as a character.

Secondly, while it’s been documented that Rowling’s books are written for progressivly older age groups, and preseumably the movies are as well, we still need to remember that these are kid movies. Look at Gilliam’s directing record, he can’t do easilly understandable films! I’m nearly 30 and have watched Brazil easilly a half dozen times, both sober, and on any number of substances, and I am still not entirely sure what the hell is going on in that movie. The only way Gilliam directing a kids movie would be a good idea would be as a “Say no to drugs” PSA.

Gilliam is a great director, and given the right adaptation, for a grown up audience, I’d love to see what he could do (I often imagine him as the perfect director for a movie based on Terry Pratchet’s “Discworld” novels) but having him direct Harry Potter is, at best, a waste of his skill sets, and at worse, something that will kill the franchise.

As far as I know Rick is in New York City running his own production company.

  6. Kim says:

Great to see the comment section back up!

As for beards, sorry boys, not a fan. The only guy with a beard that I find even remotely attractive is Santa and that may have to do with him bringing me presents every year (interestingly enough, contrary to popular belief, I actually get more presents when naughty than nice but that’s a whole other thread).

As for Potter, only got interested in the boy wizard with the last movie so I’m still hovering on the take it or leave it ledge.

Great audio edition, but I got to ask doug this question so here it goes, I don’t know if everyone has seen the commercials for a restaurant called OutBack ( I live in newfoundland, canada so I don’t know who else gets it), I was justwondering what doug nagy thought of their new spokesperson with the big black bushy eyebrows, and what he would wanna do to him if he meet him on the street

  8. Al says:

I watching TV on a weekend morning and there was charity show about protecting the natural enviornment in Canada. I think its called Nature Conservative of Canada….A bunch of Canadian celebrity was on it, some included Dan Akrroid(sp) and William Shatner. Toward the end of the show, I hear Rick Moranis speaking but they don’t show his face for some reason. Anyhow, thought u might wanna know.

  9. Kristina says:

You guys, I assume, will be speaking about how poorly MI3 did this weekend on the next audio edition. Only 48 million. Not a lot for all the hype. I think people stayed away because the movie, honestly, looked kinda lame, not because Tom is batshit crazy.

  10. DarKing says:

I really hate to say this, but are you guys slow? Yahoo.com has news on M.I:III (talking about why the studio is a bit disappointed on the movie not gaining $10 million dollars more than they hoped). The movie is #1 at the box-office. I think this news is good for a discussion. Well?

BTW, I tried to make a comment on the news for the ‘Superman Returns’ Trailer, but this website won’t let me. Does anyone have that problem too?

Drew is right…and I had no Idea until I was checking him out ( up and down ) on his IMDB profile…

    …who woulda thought?

  12. sami says:

Great beard and latte edition guys, growing a wizard beard when you’re getting old is a great idea the bad side is someone might think you’re some kind of a hippie or jesus and beat you up, next time you could debate about the colour preferences of toilet papers, white, green or pink?

  13. Sean says:

Interesting tidbit about Starbucks and Akeelah and the Bee… the reason they are advertising for it (and selling the travel edition of Scrabble as well) is because they have some sort of profit sharing deal with Lion’s Gate. It seems Starbucks is getting into producing and marketing movies now.

    Regardless, Caramel Macciatos are delicious.
