Audio Edition – March 3rd 2006

Today on The Audio Edition Doug and I discuss the new (and horrible) Arnold Schwarzenegger photos floating around, the controversy surrounding the film “Paradise Now”, some reflection on the casting of Brandon Routh as Superman, the inevitable iTunes movie downloading service and what it might take to get us interested and finally why we both think Ultraviolet will suck. This and a couple of things more.

  1. I’ve heard that you can also “re-author” these supposed copies of DVDs so that you don’t compress everything… Of course, this isn’t an option for John, who has professed to love the extras…

As for Equilibrium… at least they didn’t do any kind of 3D circular pan shot ala’ Matrix like so many other type of films have done. And if it was “derivitive” of anything I would say its derivitive more of 1984 and less of the matrix. Matter of fact, I can’t see any plot similarities between the movies but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

  2. Equilibrium was a derivitive piece of trash that was saved by the awesome action sequences. It was a Matrix rip-off. The Matrix was amazing, the same can’t be said for the stupid sequels that should have gone straight to video.

Underworld was a horrible horrible horrible movie!

I agree that seeing women kicking ass doesn’t always work. That’s the kinda weak spot in Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV show. That, and Buffy’s endless whining. “Ohh, I just wanna be a cheerleader. Weep weep.”

I only started listening to your podcasty things today (The Times were “bigging you up” here in the UK). Very cool show!

  3. Equilibrium was a good movie – it was like the matrix with a soul.

But, have you seen the ratings for Ultraviolet at Rotten Tomatoes!!!!

    It’s been totally hammered.

  4. Thoughts:

    1) Swartzy. Yes, John. I stand corrected- that photo did first appear summer 2005. Still, I think Swartzy can lose the pounds. But Chuck Norris is in his 60’s, right? So I don’t want to hear about how older action stars..what? Oh, that’s right. Norris sells gym equipment now…so he’s always in shape. My bad.

Still,. I think Swartzy can do it.

    2) It’s too late to pull the film from nominations. Yet I side with Doug on this, and Doug, that call took a lot of courage.

    3) What I would LOVE to see on Itunes is short films, LA and animated, available for download on Itunes. I’m not talking about the fan films and whatnot that you can see for free at ifilm; I’m not talking about the ten minute/under short films one can see in a little Real Player/Quicktime window from Triggerstreet.

I’m talking about short films that are Oscar nominated, or those that make film festival rounds.

As far as full length films, I notice that “extras” are not mentioned. I suppose with some sites for films, “webisodes” can be seen for the time the site is up; but I came up with this thought.

What if…and feel free to join on this thought, John Campea and Doug Nagy…

ITunes, in conjuction with filmmakers/studios offered “extras” for download and, for a dollar a pop (much like buying songs), consumers can ‘pick and choose’ deleted scenes, out-takes, FX tests and interviews that appear on DVDs…and those extras that don’t.

Folks can also choose any “trailers” that they wish and variations thereof.

When one is “satisfied” stick it in one folder and create a personalized special features DVD. This would also come in handy, I think should, for a price, people can download films off ITunes. For the movie alone, 10-15 dollars.

    4) Doug, Equalibrium did NOT do direct to video; it was buried by Dimension/ Miramax in Christmas of 2003. Released on a small number of screens, the studio had no faith in the film what-so ever. It was pre-screened for critics, who trashed it. Yet it garnished a “cult” following. I hated the film myself…

As for Ultraviolet, while I been hearing it is essential a futuristic version of Cassavette’s “Gloria”, all I can say is I’ve seen Nick Chunlund play heavies before (Con Air, Riddick) and therefore not impressed by his casting. Milla reminded me too much of Resident Evil, the set pieces look like Aeon Flux leftovers. MTV style rock vid style, and what I seen in the trailer gives MTV a bad name.

I have little to no problem with action films with women in them; I do believe it is the movies themselves. Catwoman was plain out bad. Elektra- spinoff or no- was intro’d in the Daredevil film. Now she’s this cold fish with a weak story. I personally felt that the Elektra film would have been better if Daredevil/Murdock showed up to give her a hand with The Hand…but then again, who needs help with the Hand? They break down doors, knock off people..get a scratch and they self combust in a CGI effect.

I think the true test will come with Joss Whedon’s ‘Wonder Woman’, should he ever finish the script…

Oh…John..go see 16 Blocks. If you don’t then all your praise for Richard Donner casting David Morse would have been in vain. It is a surprisingly good film. Richard Donner’s best film in YEARS.

-Sealer does not burn houses down; I just brings the wrecking ball.
