Dave Chappelle’s Block Party

I’m not a Dave Chappelle fan at all. I don’t dislike him at all… but he’s never really made me laugh. Now, having said that, I just caught the trailer for the new documentary “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party”, and I’ll admit right up front I’m really intruiged.
Spotlights comedy superstar Dave Chappelle in all-new freestyle standup material, and also one-time-only performances by Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Dead Prez, Jill Scott, and The Roots, among others. The unprecedented combination of comedy and music was shot on location, as Mr. Chappelle threw a party in downtown Brooklyn.
I think this looks really enjoyable. Looking forward to it.

Well, I saw Block Party at the Toronto Film Festival and it is amazing, truly amazing, I loved the concept and the execution lived up to my expectations and its directed by Michael Gondry, which is a good thing.
But dude….Dave Chappelle has never made you laugh? you should see a doctor about that man.

You are one of the first people ever to say they’re not a fan of Dave Chapelle. I’ve never thought his show is all that funny either and I’m bombarded by my friends telling me I’m nuts. It’s good to meet a fellow movie-man who agrees with me.
I don’t hate him either, but it’s just not that great of a show.

I think if Dave Chappelle is not funny to you it is because you don’t understand the context of his comedy or his references which comes from a certain area of culture. Alot of his humor is not universal, but that isnt to say that its not funny.
to be completely honest, John, I myself consider Chapell the funniest man alive.
He’s had some serious personal problems in the past year and i hope this project does well. i enjoy his work immensely.
Well, I am just the opposite of what John said. I’ve always loved Chappelle, and he is one of the funniest people to ever grace a comedy club. Been a fan since 95. However, I would rather watch paint dry than go see this this block party movie. Such a bad idea, I’d get the same enjoyment going to see a stomp performance during a Freaknik festival.
Can’t wait for that third season on Comedy Central

I am a hugh fan of Dave Chappelle. I have seen every movie, and every episode of the Dave Chappelle show. That being said, anyone who says Dave Chappelles Block Party is good, are only doing so to sound politically correct. Ask these people if they would watch it again. I highly doubt it. Anything negatively said about African American artists is generally frowned upon in the media. ie persecution of Kanye West wearing crown of thorns on head for cover of Rolling Stones. The movie has an array of rap and hip hop artists performing at a Block Party notibly Kanye West, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, The Fugees, Jill Scott, Talib Kweli, performing allot of rap music on a rainy day. I mean ALLOT. This documentary movie has no storyline, no plot. A few jokes are sprinkled in by Dave; but without the continuity of a comedic script, the jokes only amount to a short chuckle. This movie boils down to a poor mans version of a documentary movie. I sat thru two thirds of the movie with my girlfriend, until the pain became unbearable, and I had to find the exit door. Even if you like rap music, then ask yourself this question. Do you truly understand the lyrics of the rap music? I couldn’t understand 95% of the lyrics yelled by Kanye West, or the other rap artists. Of course this is normal isn’t it? I don’t care about trying to act cool, so I have no lost love for most rap nor do I envy the lack of talent artists generally display when they can’t sing in tune above middle “C”. I guess I am my own man, not a pawn of the rap artists publicity arm. I’m sure diehard fans of rap and hip hop will like the movie;nobody else on the planet could possibly appreciate the movie.
