I know it’s really early, but a teaser for the Paul Greengrass movie Flight 93 is here. The movie of the 9/11 hijacked plane where the passengers seemingly grouped together and stormed the cockpit resulting in the plane crashing before it reached it’s intended and deadly destination. This teaser is extremely powerful.
It’s perfect for what a teaser should be, and they’ve grasped that anyone seeing this will know what Flight 93 was (or have just been told it by the person writing on the link!) and will know the ominous undertones of the words and radar images you hear. One thing though, and I am concerned about this, is the shakey-cam effect which was so over done with the Bourne movies I’m concerned that Greengrass will overuse it here too, and that hits me with two things. It was over the top and made it very difficult to gleam details of some of the scenes, and that might be perfect for giving this movie the feel of real handheld footage. That final point can be seen by a glimpse of film at the end of the teaser, will that have the affect of heightening the feel of reality TV, and is that a good or bad thing for this movie?
I’m not sure, I know I just have concerns about that style being taken from a Bourne film straight into a mostly factual movie…
What a trailer. It was like a punch in the stomach. I about shed tears by the end of it. If this film holds half the power of this trailer, it’s going to be a doozy.
Yeah, I said doozy. So what.
And hand-held cams? Go for it, I say.
Shakey-cam is okay in moderation, but it was over the top in Supremacy…there were scenes where you didn’t know what was happening in the action, or what city you were in, who was being chased and by whom. There are levels of acceptable use, I wouldn’t say it should be out altogether.
Shakey-cam never bothered me in The Bourne Supremacy. The inability to hold a shot for more than 3.2 seconds before switching to another did.
Anyway, this movie bothers me. I don’t care how well it’s made I really can’t shake that exploitative feeling.
well i have to say that i’m both concerned about mounting tension in the world that this movie may fan… hatred toward arab americans more than anything… but it is needed. Most americans have nearly forgotten the feeling of having nearly 6000 countrymen killed because of soemthing that few of them had anything to do with…. perhapse this movie will remind them about that.
however, about this trailer, it doesnt really show much. not even much audio is revealed… i plan to see it as soon as i can, because i was born in america (australian now ) but come on… couldnt they show us more than a bleeping radar and some audio from tapes that anyone who wants to can get offline from the cell phone calls of the flight?
i have hopes… high ones for this movie, but i really want another trailer to chew on.
Aah, shakey cam. One day they’ll make a film using it just starring rappers and this website will explode.
Shakey cam is a well-established technique to give the impression of reality. A film like this is its natural home, so it’s not being lifted from Bourne and put here. Did he use it much in Omagh?
(And as a side-point, I think Bourne Supremacy managed to be quite brutal despite being a PG-13, probably because the camera wasn’t locked onto all the blows)
