Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia bought for distribution

BlackDahlia-ElroyCover.jpgMovieWeb has the encouraging story that Brian De Palma‘s movie that is currently filming has been visited on set by Universal pictures.

Universal vice chairman Marc Shmuger became convinced that the film “was vintage De Palma material like ‘The Untouchables,’ ” he said. “I was wowed by everything I saw. It’s a rare opportunity to find a project with such great talent and a masterful story, self-financed and available. The director, the cast, the key departments that they put together are extraordinary.”

With that they bought the rights for around $10-15 million. That does bode well for the movie, and those comments are way more than the announcement needed.

The movie is based on the novel by James Ellroy which itself is based on a true story of a gruesome Hollywood murder set in the 1940’s. Gruesome indeed. I’ve got my hopes up for this movie, the story sounds excellent, from the pen of the author of L.A. Confidential and directed by the great De Palma with an interesting young cast. What do you think?

  1. Yes please! After “L.A. Confidential” I have high hopes on any James Ellroy creation. I really have to start collecting his work.

  2. This project is definitely something to look forward to!
I don’t know the murder story the movie is based on, but I adore those murder stories.
