Johnny Depp wins Best Actor at SAG

depp.jpgOk, this is a total shock. At the Screen Actors Guild awards last night, Johnny Depp beat out Sean Penn to take the Best Actor award. I’m not saying this is undeserved, but I’m stunned. I can’t believe the Guild gave the award to an actor who played in a light adventure/comedy. Congtrats to Depp! Does this mean we should take him more seriously as a possible winner next Sunday at the Oscars?

Other winners were Charlize Theron (best actress) for Monster, Tim Robbins (supporting actor) for Mystic River, and Renee Zellweger (supporting actress) for Cold Mountain.

The SAG’s equivalent to “Best Picture” is the award to best ensemble cast. That award (surprise surprise) went to Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

  1. Charlie and the chocolate factorie was great anyone who hasen’t seen it needs to!!! i loved it he was really funny but i still like Pirates of the Caribbean the most!! Johnny Depp is turly a great actor i dont think anyone can ever play the parts he dose as good as he dose!!! hes just something else!!! i wish i could meet him that would be really nice!!! because of him i wanna try getting into acting he makes it sound so fun!!!

  2. Look up actor in the dictionary and you’ll find a picture of Johnny Depp. The man can act! He has played so many different roles and made all of them so unique and belivable and pulled you right into the movie. When you see the way he talks and is off of camera, you don’t know if he is being himself or a character he made up just for the purpose of when he is being interveiwed.

He was great in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and why wouldn’t he have been. The movie itself had some things that it could have done without, but as a whole the movie was good and Depp was great as the crazy Willy Wonka. In every movie he has been in, Depp’s performance has us wowed and pulled right in as I already said.

i can’t wait to see his voice performance in Corpse Bride and can’t wait to see his great acting skills once again in Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

  3. i never had as much fun watching a movie as i did in ‘pirates’. i can’t really imagine any other actor pulling that role off with such flair, either ~ without johnny cast as capn sparrow, ‘pirates’ would just have been another slapstick comedy to be forgotten two minutes after the ride.

  4. It would be pretty shocking if Depp wins the Oscar … I don’t think I can remember a comedic performance EVER winning best actor (may have happened, I just don’t remember it) and the only supporting actor nod I can recall wan Kevin Kline for Fish Called Wanda. Oscar voters just generally don’t go that way … Way I see it Depp only wins if Sean Penn (who will not win because he’s snubbed and slammed the Academy many, many times and they have long memories about that sort of thing) siphons off enough of Bill Murray’s votes for Depp to slip up the middle. Personally I’m rooting for Murray, but I’d be quite pleased if any of those three win … they’ve all done incredible work for years and been generally neglected …

  5. I think it was entirely appropriate that Johnny Depp won the SAG award. Captain Jack is a fascinating, provocative character, who Johnny created basically from scratch. Not only as a movie viewer, but as a professional historian, I loved his portrayal of Captain Jack. Johnny captured many characteristics of real pirates who we know about, yet also explored possibilities of pirate existence about which historians speculate but can’t document definitively. For example, there has been debate in pirate historiography as to whether many pirates were gay or bisexual. Johnny’s character raised that question in a humorous way, which left the viewer pondering the same questions about pirate sexuality that professional historians have long pondered.

Johnny’s portrayal of Captain Jack was not just light-hearted and comedic (although what’s wrong with that?). It was also a sophisticated and intellectual portrayal of what a real pirate’s life may have been like. Performing excellent comedy and inspiring viewers to think is a tough feat, but Johnny did both wonderfully in Pirates of the Caribbean. Indeed, since Pirates, I have frequently seen pirate history books on display in the storefronts of major bookstores – I never saw that before Pirates.

Additionally, Johnny subtly captured so many details and nuances of Captain Jack’s personality. He not only acted brilliantly in Pirates but he also created an icon, who I can’t wait to see again.

Go, Johnny! You deserve an Oscar for a stupendous performance!

  6. I was so happy. I am so glad he finally won. I wish he would have been there though I have never really heard him talk as himself. He seems so shy when he is on tv.

  7. Go Johnny Depp! It’s about time that he got recognized for what he does. He’s a tremendous actor and deserves much more than the critics give him. The big question is whether or not he’ll beat Bill Murray for the Oscar. Hope he does!

  8. I’m was also “stunned” because Sean Penn was such an overwhellming favorite to win. I thought Depp was fantastic in Pirates, but everyone seemed to be talking about Penn.

  9. I don’t think he meant “stunned that it was recognized” but rather that a mostly comedic performance won the award. – Because usually that’s not the case; In fact, it’s practically NEVER the case:
    – Daniel Day Lewis for “gangs…” 2002 (in feb 2003)
    – Russell Crowe – a Beautiful Mind – 2001
    – Benicio Del Toro in Traffic – 2000
    – Kevin Spacey in American Beauty – 1999
    – Roberto Benigni – Life is Beautiful
and so on and so forth. (these were SAG awards off-hand)

    – Jack Nicholson won for As good as it gets.. that one may come close – but usually, winners aren’t the comedy, quirky, eccentric, 2-dimensional types; even though they can be, as Johnny Depp showed us, played extremely well.

  10. Why should you be stunned? Johnny Depp did a great job playing the sappy pirate. I was very impressed by his character. He was funny in an eccentric sort of way. I’ve never been a big Johnny Depp fan but I totally adored him in this film.
