Fantastic Four Moving Ahead? Is This a Good Thing?

fantastic.jpgOne of the oldest of the Marvel Comics titles, and most likely one of the most difficult to adapt, it looks as though a new film version of The Fantastic Four is finally moving ahead and I really wish I felt better about it than I do … there are a lot of people attached to this thing that just seem wildly out of place. Not that they aren’t talented people (at least most of them) but I just have no idea what they’re doing in this film … Examples?

Director: Tim Story. Best known for Barbershop. Apparently a very good film, but in a wildly, wildy different genre and mind set from what is needed here.

The Thing: Michael Chiklis. An Emmy winner for The Shield – and he’s really good on that show – but he’s too old, not big enough, carries himself wrong and just isn’t Michael Clarke Duncan who was born for the role.

Johnny Storm: Paul Walker. Best known for his big, gooey eyes. Frighteningly the best casting choice of all the ones announced thus far.

Dr. Doom: Tim Robbins. Oh, Tim. Why? Just why? A fantastic actor who from time to time turns in a staggeringly bad performance, perhaps just to keep himself humble. I have a feeling this will provide enough humility to carry him through the rest of his career.

  1. Clooney’s come up a few times for Mr. Fantastic, but as far as I know nothing’s final yet … I think he’s the front runner, though … As for all the Asian stuff, it’s not just you David. Most people haven’t heard of them. I’ve just got a thing for Asian film …

  2. David, we are on the edge of our seats waiting for the announcement about a release date on this side of the pond for Shaun of the Dead. Those trailers are pee your pants funny!
But back to the topic at hand. I had always thought that George Clooney would make a good Reed Richards. Meh.
    Michael Chiklis?!!?

  3. I cannot believe how many comic book adaptations are now appearing! I never realised there were this many comic books around! Firstly Daredevil (a new one on me) then the news of The Punsiher (which I had never heard of) now this lot, who I have also never heard of. Maybe its living in the United Kingdom and perhaps we do not get the access to these comics. Also all these Asian films that get talked about in here, I have never ever ever heard of any of them, the DVD and film magazines I read very rarely mention them. Oh well. I watched the two X-men films for the first time at the weekend and really enjoyed them, so maybe Im being converted to the comic book genre! I am even going to attempt the first Lord of the Rings film so thats maybe another genre I might get into. The Movie Blog is to thank for that. P.S. If you get the chance try and get to watch a British film called Shaun of the Dead. It is Romantic Comedy Zombie film! It is really funny, but also contains some suspense. It pays homage to obviously Dawn of the Dead a few other horror films but isnt really a spoof like Scary Movie. If its playing over their go see it!!!!!

  4. Yeah, I want this to be good, but they’ve already gone through a few scripts and directors, which is never a good sign … and maybe Robbins will surprise me. I can’t see him in the part before, but he’s pulled surprises out before …

  5. I can see this movie being really bad. After Spider-Man came out, it seems that Marvel is pushing ideas out too fast, and without solid writing and acting, they will turn out poorly – like Daredevil. However, I won’t give up all hope. I am an old-school F4 fan, and would *love* to see a great adaptation on the big screen. Who knows – maybe this won’t be one of Tim’s few bad performances.
