The Force will be with you in September – Star Wars DVD Trilogy finally coming

Ok, get ready for every single DVD sales record to be smashed to tiny bits. The original Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV, V & VI) are being released on DVD in September. And Ghent, for the record, I actually wrote this BEFORE you were on the site ;) The following is from the Star Wars website:

The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely. “We know how long fans have waited for this release and how much they have been looking forward to it, so everyone has been working overtime to make sure that the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is an awesome experience,” said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. and the DVD collection’s Executive Producer. **The picture on the right is Jim and me**

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi will be available in a four-disc set that includes a bonus disc filled with all-new special features — including the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films. Each of the three films in the Star Wars Trilogy has been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality.

“First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer. On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the Star Wars films in a fresh and fun way,” Ward said. “We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time.”

  2. And just to top it off, word is that George has even altered the Special Editions further since they screened, so you won’t even be getting the special editions you saw on the big screen. I don’t get it. Instead of making EVERYBODY happy and making himself a boatload more money by offering both versions he has sworn that he will never allow the originals to be seen by anyone again, for any reason.

  3. See, yeah.. that point is understandable and all.. but here’s where millions of dollars can make someone a little ignorant…

It may not be was was intended, but that’s what was released, played and fallen in love with all those years ago. Stamped it. Too bad. Now, the only way you can see them is with glaringly obvious stand-out scenes laced with cgi in the middle of all these puppets?? Gimme a break.

“George” might *say* “these are the originals” — but back in the 70’s when the ORIGINAL Star Wars was ORIGINALLY aired, these editions weren’t projected onto the screens. That’s why the Special Edition is called the special edition.. because it’s a different edition and not the ORIGINAL. Special as in short bus special.

It’s not what was intended, true, but they aren’t the true origianls and never will be. I know George and all of his money would like to erase them from history (stupid), but a fat wallet won’t buy back 1977 and erase things from history –mumblemumble.. Holiday Special.. mumblemumble.—

Saying: “No, that’s not what I meant” is an excuse, but a flaccid and stupid excuse. It doesn’t work for exams, taxes, in court or even on American Idol, so it shouldn’t work here.

I’m still surprised that so many Star Wars fans were fine with the “mucking around” with the Greedo and the cantina scenes to name a few.

If someone went back and altered my Back to the Future to make it look happier and “funner” with cgi characters bouncing around and then proceeded to tell me that this “special” version *IS* the version I originally fell in love with, I’d blow a gasket.

To me, it’s the largest “I-don’t-like-this-so-I’m-taking-my-ball-and-going-home” scene I’ve ever seen.

  4. The thing you have to remember is that as far as George is concerned… the “Special Editions” are the only TRUE versions of the films. They are the movies as he intended to make them in the first place, but was unable due to budget/technology issues.

Personally, I think the Special Editions are better (except for the Jedi Rocks out scene)

  5. So, is it true?
The DVDs we’re gonna put our blood bank money down for are going to be the Special Editions from the 90s?!!? For shame.
Why does George insist on destroying the last remnants of what little remains of my childhood?

  6. Y’know, and granted, this might be me breathing air out of my bum here, but if they really wanted it to be as memorable as it was seeing it for the first time, I say, why not release the movies they released the first time?

Kicking a dead horse, maybe, but a dead horse worth kicking.
